It is not clear that the prehuman orders use signs or sign series, but it is clear that nature is ripe with interpretive transactions.  The community of interpretation derives its power and “matter” from the wealth of a world that provides it with interpretive leadings and subsequent forms of validation.  If nature is not yet an interpretive community, it is a community of spirits in which membership is largely determined by hermeneutic success.  In our conscious struggles to articulate and ramify signs, we are merely working through on a higher level what the orders of nature do without benefit of such conscious sign series. (p. 99).
